Dr. Sonia Gyan is a licensed psychologist in the State of Massachusetts.  She received  a B.A.  in Psychology from the University of Rochester and a  Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, specialization in Health Psychology, from the  University of Cincinnati.  Her clinical internship was completed at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School, followed by a  postdoctoral fellowship  at Lahey Clinic.

For approximately 10 years, Dr. Gyan was a staff psychologist in the  Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Lahey Clinic.  While  there, she treated the spectrum of  mood and anxiety conditions.  In  addition, she was a part of the Sleep Disorders Team, providing care for  the behavioral management of insomnia.  She also worked  with the  Endocrinology team, providing behavioral treatment for the  management of overweight conditions and leading a behavioral weight  management group.   As a part of the Bariatric  Surgery team, Dr. Gyan conducted  pre-surgical psychological evaluations  for those considering the weight loss surgery.

Dr. Gyan has opened a private practice in Concord, MA. Her practice is accepting new patients.
She has a strong foundation in General Clinical Psychology with a specialty area in Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine.  She primarily treats adults, but will offer consultation and treatment to children and teens for specialty treatment of sleep and overweight related issues, only.  At this time, she does not provide general psychotherapy for children or teens.  If there are other ongoing psychological issues, the child/teen will need to be under the care of another psychological provider and Dr. Gyan can offer specialty consultation/treatment for the insomnia and/or obesity.

Examples of psychological conditions Dr. Gyan enjoys treating include:

  • anxiety
  • physical stress
  • panic attacks
  • relationship/interpersonal stress
  • life stress
  • career stress
  • parenting stress

Dr. Gyan also offers specialty treatment for conditions where stress or behaviors are negatively impacting on physical health.   These conditions are treated within a health psychology/behavioral medicine approach:

  • insomnia  CBT-I
  • difficulty coping and/or complying with medical diagnoses/regimens (ex., diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic pain conditions)
  • weight management
  • hypertension
  • issues surrounding the bariatric/weight loss surgery process
  • health anxiety

Dr. Gyan  uses evidence-based, research validated approaches to treatment.   At the same time, she tries to tailor the treatment so it doesn't feel like a set of techniques.  She uses a collaborative approach, knowing that each individual is the expert on him/herself.   She is trained in cognitive/ behavioral therapies, relaxation therapies, mindfulness therapies,  interpersonal therapy, stress management and incorporates aspects from other treatment models as appropriate.   She strongly believes in the relationships between the mind, body and social environment and helps individuals target change in all 3 systems within a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental collaboration.

To schedule a phone consultation, please call Dr. Gyan at (978) 202-5636 or email her at sonia@drsoniagyan.com.  She looks forward to speaking with you and hopes to work with you to meet your life and health goals as well as treatment and assessment needs.
