Dr. Sonia Gyan is a licensed psychologist in the State of Massachusetts. She received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, specialization in Health Psychology, from the University of Cincinnati. Her clinical internship was completed at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Lahey Clinic Medical Center.
For approximately 10 years, Dr. Gyan was a staff psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Lahey Clinic. While there, she treated the spectrum of mood and anxiety conditions. In addition, she was a part of the Sleep Disorders Team, providing care for the behavioral management of insomnia. She also worked with the Endocrinology team, providing behavioral treatment for the management of overweight conditions and leading a behavioral weight management group. As a part of the Bariatric Surgery team, Dr. Gyan conducted pre-surgical psychological evaluations for those considering the weight loss surgery.
Dr. Gyan has a strong foundation in General Clinical Psychology with a specialty area in Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine. She primarily treats adults, but will offer consultation and treatment to children and teens for specialty treatment of sleep and overweight related issues, only. At this time, she does not provide general psychotherapy for children or teens. If there are other ongoing psychological issues, the child/teen will need to be under the care of another psychological provider and Dr. Gyan can offer specialty consultation/treatment for the insomnia and/or obesity.

Dr. Gyan uses evidence-based, research validated approaches to treatment. At the same time, she tries to tailor the treatment so it doesn't feel like a set of techniques. She uses a collaborative approach, knowing that each individual is the expert on the self. She is trained in cognitive/ behavioral therapies, relaxation therapies, mindfulness therapies, interpersonal therapy, stress management and incorporates aspects from other treatment models as appropriate. She strongly believes in the relationships between the mind, body and social environment and helps individuals target change in all 3 systems within a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental collaboration.
